So I basically read my manga/manhwa in three forms:
Printed books
Digital/eBooks
Webcomics
So you must be thinking, but Liz! Why do you separate Digital separately from webcomics? I thought they are the same! Dear reader, they definitely different and I’ll explain why below!
Printed books
This is pretty straightforward. For those of us over a certain age, we know that comics in general have only been in digital form in the past few years. At least in the West. Japan did this years earlier than we did in the USA at least. So for years they only way I could read manga was to wait for the print version to be released. I’d then proceed to run to Borders (RIP!), Barnes & Noble, or Japanese book stores like Kinokuniya. I have a number of manga I collected over the years.
However, I am considering either trying to re-sell or possibly donate/give away a few series. There are some titles I don’t feel like I want to keep anymore. I’ve already cut back purchasing physical books a few years.
Due to literal space issues, I have become more selective of my purchases. I only by physical books if I feel like this thing is so good I must have a physical copy. Both for personal enjoyment and letting others borrow said book(s) to check out too. There are just some titles I feel like I don’t honestly have motivation to re-read ever again. They should go to someone else who can truly appreciate them when I no longer do.
Digital/eBooks
These days I purchase manga this way when I buy any at all. It’s just way more convenient. Ebooks don’t take up space in my home and it’s easier to bring my library with me. Whether it’s on my commutes between home and work or I go on a trip, I can read whatever I want at any time.
Webcomics
Unlike eBooks, these are typically released a chapter at a time. Maybe you’re lucky and they’ll do 2-4 chapters at a time. Regardless you’re going to get it piecemeal versus a volume of a series. I sometimes don’t know which is honestly better, getting comics chapters at a time like this or a volume every few months.
Final Thoughts
Regardless of how you get your content, just enjoy reading it! And speaking of, the screenshot above is a preview! That’s right folks, the next 6 posts will be me discussing each of the six apps I’ve tried using so far. I’ll be providing some info about the apps, their price points, and my overall experiences using them.
Maybe you’ve used some of them. Maybe you haven’t. Hopefully my thoughts on each of them give you ideas about what you should use. Or maybe you’re just curious about an app you’ve not tried before.
How do you guys read comics? Would you be interested in me doing a review of the apps? Leave a comment and let me know!
