Goofy Or Genius - 3 Interesting Isekai Tropes I've Noticed Recently
You guys let me know what you think in the comments
If you’ve been following my publication for the last year or so, you’re likely aware that I’m a fan of isekai. I wouldn’t describe myself as an isekai aficionado. But I’ve read and seen enough to notice some interesting tropes.
I can’t lie. I think they are on the border of genius and goofy. What do you guys think? Leave a comment with what you think. Also be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already and share with friends who might be into the same content!
Truck-kun strikes again!
There are different ways for characters to go from this world to another one. I even talk about this in a past post from last year.
It’s a literal trope now that the way you get sent to another world is you get run over by a truck that comes speeding down the street out of nowhere. You do get variations of this like getting hit by a car, a plane crash, and on the rare occasion being stabbed by a random nutcase, or a vending machine falling out of a truck that lands on you. That is literally what happened to the main character of the opening image.
I suppose it only makes sense you have to change it up. But it’s just wild the variations that writers come up with. I’d be curious what would be you think is the most unique version.
Reincarnating into a story
I’m mostly seeing this in the manhwa I read, but I will occasionally see this in anime and manga. Imagine you died and wake up in another world. And then to your shock you realize you wake up as a character in the manga/novel/video game you were reading before you died.
Are you going to try playing things out like in the novel or change your fate? Oh and add 100 difficulty points if you wake up as the villain/villainess of the original story. I have seen them include details like the main character realizing there’s new info they learn about not mentioned in the original story. Which just adds to the unpredictability of the story for the main character.
OP beyond belief
There’s been cases of people who isekai and end up powerful. Maybe they are powerful as soon as they arrive. Maybe they' develop their op-ness as the story progresses. But by the time they get to the most exciting parts of the story, they’re S rank in badassery. Or if they’re not S rank, they’re triple S or something crazy like that.
Sometimes the writer does it in a way where it makes a lot of sense. Other times they go overboard and the main character is ridiculously powerful. It borders on goofy. It also can make the story and the character boring if they’re OP too early or easily.
Final housekeeping notes
Before I close out, I wanted to make a couple of quick announcements.
First off, “React with Me" will go on an extended hiatus. I’m currently debating whether or not I’ll actually continue with it. I think spending a few weeks not writing it will make me realize whether or not I’ll continue or not.
Secondly, I’ve been working on cafemanga.com! It’s a website that will be a companion to this Substack publication. It’ll be a mix of reposting of content from here and some original content that doesn’t fit on here. It’s possible that I might move “React with Me” to the website instead of here on Substack in the future.
